On the occasion of the European Cultural Heritage Year 2018 (ECHY), the German-speaking European restorer associations within E.C.C.O. VDR (Germany), SKR (Switzerland), ÖRV (Austria) and VRKS¬‐ARCA (South Tyrol) would like to shift the focus to the connecting elements in the European cultural region and deepen their cooperation with a joint specialist conference.
The conference is planned as a two-day symposium and will take place in the context of EXPONATEC COLOGNE in Cologne on 23 and 24 November 2017.
The theme of the conference, 'Trompe-l’oeil − Illusion and reality', deals with a genre of visual arts that makes demands of preservation and restoration in an interdisciplinary fashion. It provides an opportunity to discuss a variety of themes and materials for "deceiving the eye" from many artistic disciplines with inspiring individual solutions.
However, the room for interpretation with regard to questions of career policy also appears to be stimulating and productive: how do conservators and restorers see themselves today, how is the profession viewed from outside and who is fooling who, or about what? What consequences does the varying degree of recognition of the restorer profession in the European context have for the preservation of a shared cultural heritage?
The context of the ECHY, with the motto of 'Sharing Heritage', can be used here as a chance to draw increased public attention to these aspects and to emphasise the importance of the profession for the mediation of cultural identities. The event thereby primarily serves the purpose of promoting scientific exchange across borders and makes it possible for the associations to establish sustainable long-term cooperation at the transnational level.
The lecture programme will be rounded off by a reception at the invitation of the Deutsches Nationalkomitee für Denkmalschutz in the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Foundation Corboud, Cologne, as well as the Colourful Night of the VDR with buffet, music and dancing.
