The congress The 1. Deutscher Muesemskongress (1st German museum congress) takes place on 20 November 2019 for the first time in the context of the Exponatec Cologne trade fair. The goal of the congress is to discuss the challenges facing museums and to present "best practice" examples. Top class speakers from renowned museums will discuss with participants the latest developments and trends in the fields of collecting, research, conservation, exhibiting and mediation of knowledge, as well as management and communication.

10:30 a.m. The evolution of the museum
Society develops rapidly and is subject to great changes. Particularly the digital influence doesn't stop at museums. What does this mean for museums? In order to acquire renewable visitor groups, they must adjust to new forms of communication.
11:00 a.m. The challenge of digitalisation
This means that various challenges must be mastered completely centrally in the field of digitalisation. New mediation formats such as apps and tweetups are as much a part of museums as the use of chatbots.

Digital strategy for museums Museum 4.0: In an age in which the leading nations of our world, such as China and the USA, demonstrate digital development that is far beyond our progress, the German museum world must adapt to new forms of communication. In the process, there is a large number of different mediation formats that can have an important impact when used capably. This results in completely new requirements for employees and technology.
12:00 p.m. The art of conceiving of and designing exhibitions
The idea for an exhibition concept must have a dramaturgical structure and demonstrate a content orientation coordinated to education. The design of the exhibition must build upon this. The dramaturgy must take visitors with it and awaken their interest in order to sustainably win them as regular visitors.

Museum for all – imperative or illusion? What do demographic change, globalisation, individualisation, economisation, flexibilisation or digitalisation mean for museums?
2:00 p.m. "Customer Centricity" – Best practice
Various examples are used to demonstrate how institutions in various areas, whether natural history, technical, historical or archaeological museums, have adjusted to the change and development in their public in an exemplary fashion.
2:30 p.m. Panel marketing + communication
Marketing, press, fundraising and co. – Best practice The focus is on addressing the target groups of museums: communication for all senses. In addition, examples of successful cross-media campaigns are presented, and important themes such as fundraising are placed in question in international comparison.
3:00 p.m. Sustainability of museums
How can the museum also take sustainable development into consideration in critical dealings with the cultural heritage entrusted to them? What roles do archiving, conservation and maintenance play in the process?
3:30 p.m. Congress end with subsequent tours through Exponatec
